Ujjain: The
Navel of the Earth
"In ancient Indian geography, Ujjain is considered the 'Nabhi' (Navel) of the universe. It is the place where the Sun's zenith at Midsummer is exactly 90 degrees."
Modern scientists confirm that Ujjain's coordinates (23.18° N) place it almost precisely on the Tropic of Cancer. For thousands of years, Vedic astronomers like Varahamihira used Ujjain as their zero-longitude reference (the GMT of the ancient world).

Ujjain Junction is most alive at 3:00 AM. This is the peak 'Bhasma Aarti' transit window. You will find hundreds of e-rickshaws and taxis waiting at Platform 1. We recommend heading straight to the temple cloakroom if you have a 4:00 AM slot, or to your hotel if checking in early. Our concierge team can also arrange a 3 AM pickup for guaranteed safety and ease.
The distance is ~140km. You can take a private taxi (takes 3.5 hours) or a state-run bus from Nana Kheda Stand. Taxis usually charge ₹3,500 - ₹4,500 for a round trip within the same day. The road transit is smooth via the Indore bypass. Pro Tip: Start by 5:00 AM to cover both Mamleshwar and Omkareshwar temples comfortably before returning to Ujjain by nightfall.
Yes, Indore's Devi Ahilya Bai Holkar Airport operates 24/7. However, the frequency of taxis to Ujjain is highest between 6:00 AM and 11:00 PM. If landing after midnight, we strongly recommend pre-booking your transfer with Ujjain Travel Hub to avoid surge pricing or availability issues in the dead of night.
It is ~1.5km. For a physically fit pilgrim, it is a 20-minute walk through the 'Dewas Gate' and 'Fawwara Chowk'. However, during festivals or with heavy luggage, a ₹50 e-rickshaw ride is much more comfortable. Note that the pedestrian path is crowded; navigation can be slow.
Nana Kheda and Dewas Gate stands have basic cloakrooms, but they are not as secure as the Railway Station ones. We advise using the 'Amanati Saman' facility at the Mahakal Temple complex or the secure digital lockers at the Railway Station instead.
Hire an e-rickshaw for the 'Local Darshan' package. Usually, they charge ₹600 - ₹800 to take you to 7-8 major temples including Kal Bhairav, Mangalnath, Harsiddhi, and Sandipani Ashram. This remains the most cost-effective and agile transit mode for Ujjain's narrow lanes.
Ujjain City (UJN) is the primary station and is exceptionally close (1.5km) to the temple corridors. Vikram Nagar (VMA) is a secondary station, about 6km away, and serves mostly slow local passenger trains. Always aim for UJN for maximum convenience.
Extremely frequent. In 2025, there is a bus every 10-15 minutes from 5:00 AM to 11:30 PM. For comfort, choose 'Chartered' or 'Narmada' AC buses which run from Indore's Sarwate or Vijay Nagar starting points.
Yes. The Indore-Bhopal and New Delhi-Indore Vande Bharat trains both stop at Ujjain Junction. These offer the fastest transit for those arriving from Delhi or Kota.
Yes, paid parking is available at Platform 1 and Platform 8 gates. It is safe for 24-48 hours. For longer durations, we recommend using the multi-level parking near the Mahakal corridor which has better security surveillance.
