About Omkareshwar Temple

Omkareshwar Temple is one of the 12 sacred Jyotirlingas of Lord Shiva, located on a serene island in the holy Narmada River. The temple derives its name from the shape of the island, which resembles the sacred syllable "Om" when viewed from above. This island, known as Mandhata or Shivapuri, is formed by the bifurcation of the Narmada river, creating a unique geological and spiritual phenomenon.

According to Hindu mythology, Lord Shiva manifested as a Jyotirlinga here to settle a dispute between gods and demons. The temple complex includes multiple shrines and offers a peaceful spiritual atmosphere away from the crowds. Legend speaks of King Mandhata of the Ikshvaku dynasty, who performed such intense penance here that Lord Shiva agreed to reside on this island eternally.

The Twin Temple Mystery: Omkareshwar & Mamleshwar

Many pilgrims believe that a visit to Omkareshwar is incomplete without visiting the **Mamleshwar Temple** located on the south bank of the Narmada. It is widely accepted that the Jyotirlinga is actually split into two partsOmkareshwar on the island and Mamleshwar on the mainland.

While Omkareshwar represents the formless, Mamleshwar is where the linga is worshipped with rituals. Traditionally, devotees visit Omkareshwar first before crossing back to pay their respects at Mamleshwar to complete their pilgrimage cycle.

Navigating the Narmada: Boat Rides & Parikrama

Crossing the Narmada to reach the island is an experience in itself. While there is a suspension bridge (Jhula Pul), many preferred the traditional boat ride. **Boat charges** are typically regulated by the local administration, ranging from ?30 for a shared ride to ?500-?800 for a private boat that takes you on a full circuit of the island.

The **Omkareshwar Parikrama** is a 7-kilometer trek around the island, passing through ancient ruins, small shrines, and breathtaking viewpoints of the Sangam (confluence) of the Narmada and Kaveri rivers. For elderly pilgrims, we recommend the boat parikrama, which allows you to witness the island's 'OM' shape from the water.

The temple is especially significant during festivals and auspicious occasions when thousands gather for darshan and puja ceremonies. In 2026, with the completion of the *Ekatmata Dham* (Statue of Oneness), Omkareshwar has transformed into a global spiritual hub, making advanced planning essential.
