Mahakaleshwar Jyotirlinga is one of the most famous and powerful among the 12 Jyotirlingas, situated in the ancient city of Ujjain, Madhya Pradesh, along the banks of the sacred Shipra River. The idol of Mahakaleshwar is known to be Dakshinamukhi, which means that it is facing the south, a unique feature among the 12 Jyotirlingas. It is highly revered for its Bhasma Aarti, a spectacular dawn ritual where hot ash (bhasma) is applied to the Shivling.

General darshan at Mahakaleshwar is free, but lines can be long. For faster entry, the temple management offers a VIP Darshan ticket (Sheeghra Darshan) at ₹250 per person, available near the temple counters or online at the official shri mahakaleshwar website. Bhasma Aarti booking is separate and extremely competitive. It opens daily on the official portal exactly one month in advance and tickets fill up in minutes. The ticket is essentially free but you must do a jalabhishek donation to participate.

The ideal time to visit Ujjain and the Mahakaleshwar Temple is between October and March when the weather is cool and pleasant.
