Omkareshwar is one of the 12 revered Jyotirlinga shrines of Lord Shiva. It is on an island called Mandhata or Shivapuri in the Narmada river; the shape of the island is said to be like the divine symbol 'Om' (ΰ₯). Apart from the main Omkareshwar temple, there is another temple called Mamleshwar (Amaleshwar) situated on the south bank of the Narmada river. Both are deeply connected to the Omkareshwar Jyotirlinga belief.
